FAQ

  • What is tallow, and why is it good for your skin?

Tallow is pure, rendered animal (beef) fat - primarily composed of triglycerides made up of long-chain fatty acids such as stearic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid, and linoleic acid. These are the same types of fatty acids naturally found in our skin’s sebum, which is why tallow blends seamlessly with our skin barrier and supports its repair.

It’s also rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, which promote cell regeneration, elasticity, and moisture retention. The stearic and palmitic acids strengthen the skin’s lipid barrier and lock in hydration, while oleic acid enhances absorption and soothes inflammation.

Unlike many commercial moisturisers filled with synthetic emulsifiers and silicones that sit on top of the skin, tallow deeply penetrates to nourish and restore the skin at a cellular level, supporting long-term hydration and balance - not just surface softness.

  • Is tallow safe for sensitive or acne-prone skin?

Yes - our high-quality, grass-fed tallow balm is exceptionally gentle and compatible with all skin types, including sensitive and acne-prone skin.

Tallow’s fatty acid composition closely mimics our own sebum, allowing it to balance natural oil production rather than clog pores. It’s non-comedogenic (rated around 2 on the comedogenic scale), meaning it moisturises without blocking pores or trapping bacteria.

Because it’s rich in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and palmitoleic acid, tallow naturally carries antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that help calm redness, reduce irritation, and support the skin’s healing process.

For acne-prone skin, this means fewer flare-ups, stronger barrier function, and improved texture over time - all without the harsh drying agents found in conventional skincare.

For those with serious skin sensitivity concerns, we recommend using our sensitive skin whipped tallow balm - containing only whipped tallow (no carrier oils or essential oils).

  • What makes Tablelands Tallow different from other skincare brands?

Every jar of Tablelands Tallow begins right here on the Atherton Tablelands, where we handcraft our products in small batches using 100% grass-fed tallow from local farmers we know and trust. Unlike many brands, we hand-cut the raw fat ourselves from the kidney suet, then render it gently over seven days - a slow, traditional process that ensures the tallow stays pure, nutrient-rich, and deeply nourishing for the skin.

We believe in keeping things simple and real - no hidden parabens, fragrances, or fillers, just honest ingredients that let your skin thrive. Our focus is on transparency, sustainability, and genuine care… not hype. With us, you’ll always know exactly what’s in your jar, and the heart that went into making it.

  • Is your tallow ethically and sustainably sourced?

Absolutely. Our tallow comes from local, grass-fed cattle raised on regenerative farms in Far North Queensland. By using tallow, we’re reducing waste and supporting nose-to-tail sustainability - giving value to a nutrient-rich ingredient that would otherwise be discarded.

  • Can I use tallow balm on my face and body?

Yes! Our whipped tallow balm is designed for the whole body - face, hands, even lips. Because it’s so rich in natural nutrients, a little goes a long way. It melts into the skin, leaving it soft, hydrated, and balanced without feeling greasy.

  • How long does tallow skincare last, and how should I store it?

Our products are free from synthetic preservatives but remain stable for up to 12 months when stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Because tallow is naturally antimicrobial, it stays fresh much longer than most “natural” creams.
